#SLS: Redemption Song

My last week’s entry for #SongLyricSunday were the songs by John Mayer – Comfortable and D’ Sound – Tattooed on My Mind. For this week, Jim has given us prompt words such as long, short, small and tall. The songs that we choose must contain any of these words either in the title or the lyrics.

I choose Redemption Song by Bob Marley and the Wailers because first, I love reggae and second, because this sends such a powerful message.

Old pirates, yes, they rob I
Sold I to the merchant ships
Minutes after they took I
From the bottomless pit

But my hand was made strong
By the hand of the Almighty
We forward in this generation
Triumphantly

Won’t you help to sing
These songs of freedom?
‘Cause all I ever have
Redemption songs
Redemption songs

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery
None but ourselves can free our minds
Have no fear for atomic energy
‘Cause none of them can stop the time
How long shall they kill our prophets
While we stand aside and look? Ooh
Some say it’s just a part of it
We’ve got to fullfil the bookWon’t you help to sing
These songs of freedom?
‘Cause all I ever have
Redemption songs
Redemption songs
Redemption songs

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery
None but ourselves can free our mind
Woah, have no fear for atomic energy
‘Cause none of them-a can-a stop-a the time

How long shall they kill our prophets
While we stand aside and look?
Yes, some say it’s just a part of it
We’ve got to fulfill the book

Won’t you help to sing
These songs of freedom?
‘Cause all I ever had
Redemption songs
All I ever had
Redemption songs
These songs of freedom
Songs of freedom

        1. He did focus on a niche – which is racial issues. While reading your comment, I thought of possible reasons; perhaps because he died so young way before the fight for “equality in general” had its turn? or was it because of his Rastafarian beliefs that follow conservative Christian ideologies? Could be.

What I find good is that the message of his songs such as emancipation, rebellion against systems of oppression, and fighting for rights are now being used as a mantra for female empowerment.
