Isolation Day 6: One More Cup of Coffee (SLS)

Am I late for today’s Song Lyric Challenge? Pardon me because I just got a new symptom, my eyes are burning like hell. It’s like there’s jalapeño rush all over my eyes. I tried napping in the hopes that it will get better right after, but no. It’s still the same.

Jim chose prompt words such as Cappuccino, Coffee, Expresso, Latte, Mocha. The song that we choose must contain one of these prompt words in either the title or the lyrics.

My choice this week is Bob Dylan’s One More Cup of Coffee (chose this video because it’s so cool). This was a live performance in 1975 and the video is owned by Netflix. Bob is one of my favorite singers / poets… he is a jewel!

Your breath is sweet, your eyes are like
Two jewels in the sky
Your back is straight, your hair is smooth
On the pillow where you lie
But I don’t sense affection
No gratitude or love
Your loyalty is not to me but to the stars above

One more cup of coffee for the road
One more cup of coffee ‘fore I go
To the valley below

Your daddy he’s an outlaw
And a wanderer by trade
He’ll teach you how to pick an’ choose
And how to throw the blade
And he oversees his kingdom
So no stranger does intrude
His voice it trembles as he calls out
For another plate of food

One more cup of coffee for the road
One more cup of coffee ‘fore I go
To the valley below

Your sister sees the future
Like your momma and yourself
You’ve never learned to read or write
There’s no books upon your shelf
And your pleasure know no limits
Your voice is like a meadow lark
But your heart is like an ocean
Mysterious and dark

One more cup of coffee for the road
One more cup of coffee ‘fore I go
To the valley below

  1. Love Bob Dylan…. kaya lang medyo somosobra ako sa kape, dapat kong bawasan iyon. Kumusta ang quarantine? Tiyak na hindi madali pero kaunting tiis at lilipas iyan. I am almost missing the days when I was bedridden as Gregorio Del Pilay…at least I was not working

  2. Thank you for sharing, Janis. I did get to see Bob play live in 1986. He had Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers with him. Bob and Tom also played together.

One More Cup of Coffee is from a great album: Desire, which we still have and I play every few years or on our record player. Hurricane, One More Cup of Coffee, Mozambique and Sara were some of the very first songs I learnt on guitar 😊 I have always found the lyrics “to the valley below” mesmerising. Mozambique is one of my favourite songs to play on guitar and I do so, even now.

I hope the burning sensation you are feeling re your eyes settles down soon.

    1. Wow really? It must have been super awesome Sean! I also love Tom Petty. It’s my youngest sister who introduced me to his music.

Listening to Dylan’s music makes me wish I was born in a different decade (of course not considering the political conflicts back then)

      1. It was very special, Janis. There was one fan who kept yelling out all night “Play Hurricane.” Bob didn’t of course as he is not big on fan requests during a concert. Eventually, security had something to say on the matter 😂 Tom Petty was excellent, in fact better than Bob on the night. So, I am glad I got to see Tom as he left this world way too soon.

I am glad you like Bob’s music. I have to admit every time I hear “Like a Rolling Stone,” I grab the guitar and play it too. Overall, we are lucky to be around at the same time as Dylan. He is first and foremost a great poet. The music seems to fit hand in glove with what he writes. He has changed his style many times. Until COVID he was playing 100 concerts a year – staggering really. He has toured where I am 19 times previously.

        1. True. Dylan is a true poet! He is the first rapper, I always say.

I am glad I’ve come to know of Petty’s music before he’s passed on.

You are lucky to have witnessed them play live. It’s a privilege as my dad would say 🙂
