Happy 4th, Americans!

Independence Day, also called Fourth of July or July 4th, in the United States is the annual celebration of nationhood. It commemorates the passage of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776.

The Philippines also used to celebrate this day as our Independence Day since we were once an American territory however later, since Japan also occupied the Country during WW2, the name was later changed to Philippine–American Friendship Day. What a cheesy name for a holiday, right? Perhaps that is why they have changed it yet again to another name – The Philippine Republic Day.

Since it’s Fourth of July, Jim has given us the prompt, “American music” in which we can basically post any song played by an American group.

I chose songs from Black Eyed Peas (also known as The Black Eyed Peas). They are an American musical group, consisting of rappers Will.I.Am, Apl.De.Ap, Taboo and J. Rey Soul (officially a member in 2020). They’re originally an alternative hip hop group, but subsequently refashioned themselves as a pop-rap act for marketing concerns. Although the group was founded in Los Angeles in 1995, it was not until the release of their third album, Elephunk, in 2003, that they achieved high record sales.

Fergie and Kim Hill were former members.

I especially chose the song Where is the Love because, it’s timely…

Where Is The Love?

What’s wrong with the world, mama
People livin’ like they ain’t got no mamas
I think the whole world’s addicted to the drama
Only attracted to the things that’ll bring the trauma

Overseas, yeah, we tryin’ to stop terrorism
But we still got terrorists here livin’
In the USA, the big CIA
The Bloods and The Crips and the KKK

But if you only have love for your own race
Then you only leave space to discriminate
And to discriminate only generates hate
And when you hate then you’re bound to get irate, yeah

Madness is what you demonstrate
And that’s exactly how anger works and operates
Man, you gotta have love, this’ll set us straight
Take control of your mind and meditate
Let your soul gravitate to the love, y’all, y’all

People killin’, people dyin’
Children hurt and you hear them cryin’
Can you practice what you preach?
And would you turn the other cheek?

Father, Father, Father help us
Send some guidance from above
‘Cause people got me, got me questionin’
Where is the love (Love)

Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love, the love, the love

It just ain’t the same, old ways have changed
New days are strange, is the world insane?
If love and peace is so strong
Why are there pieces of love that don’t belong?

Nations droppin’ bombs
Chemical gasses fillin’ lungs of little ones
With ongoin’ sufferin’ as the youth die young
So ask yourself is the lovin’ really gone

So I could ask myself really what is goin’ wrong
In this world that we livin’ in people keep on givin’ in
Makin’ wrong decisions, only visions of them dividends
Not respectin’ each other, deny thy brother
A war is goin’ on but the reason’s undercover

The truth is kept secret, and swept under the rug
If you never know truth then you never know love
Where’s the love, y’all, come on (I don’t know)
Where’s the truth, y’all, come on (I don’t know)
Where’s the love, y’all

People killin’, people dyin’
Children hurt and you hear them cryin’
Can you practice what you preach?
Or would you turn the other cheek?

Father, Father, Father help us
Send some guidance from above
‘Cause people got me, got me questionin’
Where is the love (Love)

Where is the love (The love)?
Where is the love (The love)?
Where is the love (The love)?
Where is the love (The love)?
Where is the love (The love)?
Where is the love (The love)?
Where is the love, the love, the love?

I feel the weight of the world on my shoulder
As I’m gettin’ older, y’all, people gets colder
Most of us only care about money makin’
Selfishness got us followin’ the wrong direction

Wrong information always shown by the media
Negative images is the main criteria
Infecting the young minds faster than bacteria
Kids wanna act like what they see in the cinema

Yo’, whatever happened to the values of humanity
Whatever happened to the fairness and equality
Instead of spreading love we’re spreading animosity
Lack of understanding, leading us away from unity

That’s the reason why sometimes I’m feelin’ under
That’s the reason why sometimes I’m feelin’ down
There’s no wonder why sometimes I’m feelin’ under
Gotta keep my faith alive ’til love is found
Now ask yourself

Where is the love?
Where is the love?
Where is the love?
Where is the love?

Father, Father, Father, help us
Send some guidance from above
‘Cause people got me, got me questionin’
Where is the love?

Sing with me y’all
One world, one world (We only got)
One world, one world (That’s all we got)
One world, one world
And something’s wrong with it (Yeah)
Something’s wrong with it (Yeah)
Something’s wrong with the wo-wo-world, yeah
We only got
(One world, one world)
That’s all we got
(One world, one world)

Additionally, to celebrate the Filipino-American Friendship Day, I am also posting a song made for the Philippines being that Apl is a Filipino-American. The lyrics are Filipino but the beat will surely entertain you.

The song is called BEBOT (which means, girl or lady, particularly, a hot one)

Bebot bebot
Be bebot bebot
Be bebot bebot be
Ikaw ang aking
Bebot bebot
Be bebot bebot
Be bebot bebot be

Hoy pare pakinggan nyo ko
Eto nang tunay na filipino
Galing sa baryo sa pangbato
Pumunta ng LA nagtrabaho
Para makatulong sa nanay
Dahil sa hirap ng buhay
Pero masaya parin ang kulay
Pag kumain nagkakamay
Yung kanin, chicken adobo
Yung balot, binebenta sa kanto
Tagay mo na nga ang baso
Pare ko inuman na tayo Filipino!

Wala kang katulad sa mundo ko

Kung buhay mo’y mahalaga, sige
Salamat sa iyong suporta

  1. Very nice music Janis. I dated this girl who wanted me to go to a Black Eyed Pees concert with her, but it was at the ski resort in Vail Colorado and I would have had to take too much time off from work to go so I declined, but I heard it was a great show.

    1. That is so true… sometimes, no matter how good they are, they are not just worth too much movement hahaha…

But you know, I was in HS around 95-98 when the Backstreetboys was a HIT. They were daddies when they had a concert here in JEDDAH, 2 hour flight away from us, my sister (who just gave birth via Caesarean Section) and I had to go to Jeddah, not knowing a thing about that city… we thought we got abducted because the taxi driver kept on talking about rude stuff borderline sexual harassment — we know nothing about the place and it’s no Riyadh… there’s too much empty space / desert between the airport and the stadium from where the concert was held…. nevertheless, it was worth fulfilling our youthful dreams to see the BSB… But it was stressful for real!

      What happened to the girl??

      1. We dated when I lived in North Carolina, but I moved to Florida and she found a new guy. I did go back to visit her once as we always got along really well. Jeddah, Saudi Arabia sounds like a place to avoid, but I am happy that you had a good time there with your sister.

  2. I remember this song when it came out! A great song and very timely indeed. Did you see the Kim Hill documentary about being the original member before Fergie?

    1. I tried to recall where I was when the song was released… and yes… I was having the time of my life! I don’t know why I just had goosebumps haha.

I have seen it and I believe it’s for the good of everyone… BEP got their fame & success (and I know Fergie’s charisma also had something to do with it) — as for KIM, she may not have become as famous but she remained how she wanted her music to be and didn’t sell out for what the “business” dictates.
